February Shawl – Free Crochet Pattern

posted in: Crochet, Free Pattern, Song Shawl CAL | 2

This month’s Song Shawl is FREE! You’ll find the pattern below. The song for the shawl is February Song by Josh Groban. I hope you are enjoying the Song Shawl CAL so far. If you prefer a printable version of the February Shawl it is available in the Song Shawl Pattern Set. If you missed all the squishy details about the Song Shawl CAL, taking place form September 2023 to August 2024, then you’ll want to read this post.

  • This triangle shawl is worked in rows, you will chain 3 and turn to begin each new row. The chain 3 always counts as the first stitch in the increase.
  • A total side stitch count is given at the end of each row in ( ). This count is for only one side of the shawl. It includes all stitches and chain spaces EXCEPT the ch2 corner space that makes up the tip of the triangle shawl.
  • This pattern can be made with any weight yarn & hook, working until you reach the size you prefer. Using the yarn and hook listed below my shawl was about 70” wide and 36” center to tip.
  • If you use a heavier yarn, I recommend going up 1-2mm from the size listed on the label (or 1-2mm larger than the size you normal use for say, a granny square, in that yarn) so that you will still achieve the open, lacy result intended by design.
  • The photo was blocked to the size given above. Blocking is highly recommended to open the stitches and show the lovely lacy texture.

Yarn & Supplies

  • 850 yards 4 ply yarn (sock/fine weight)
    • I used 100% non-superwash Highland Wool dyed by Kernow Designs called April Showers
  • 5mm Hook

Repeat Rows 5-12 until desired size is reached. The side st count will go up by 6 stitches after each completed row (rows 5-10) EXCEPT for rows 11 and 12 – the count will go up only 4 stitches after each of those rows.

Final Row: Crab Stitch, working only 1 Crab St into the ch2 tip/corner. For a link to my quick video of the Crab St see page 2.

Alternately, you could opt to work sc instead, if so, you will need to work 3sc into the ch2 tip/corner.
