2022 Christmas Filet CAL Week 1

Before you dive into this CAL, please make sure you’ve read the 2022 Christmas Filet CAL Details Post to get the hook, yarn, and size information. If this is your first Mayhem & Majesty filet pattern, then please also read my Guide to Numerical Filet Patterns so you understand how my patterns are written.

Welcome to the 2022 Christmas Filet CAL!

The weekly posts will include two patterns; one for the block blanket and one for the one-piece blanket.

Those making the Granny-block version will make a new ornament each week.

If you are making a one-piece, then you’ll get 8 new rows to complete each week. After four weeks the one-piece will have a complete row of four different ornaments. The one-piece pattern will contain color change notes, these look like this: ©. If you are making solid color panels, just ignore the color-change symbol.

If you’d prefer printable versions of these CAL blankets, then you can find the 2022 Christmas Filet CAL in my shop. The paid version includes the 12 separate block patterns, 3 complete blanket patterns (granny blocks, one-piece with color change symbols, and one-piece without the color change symbols), and all the graphs.

Stitches – US Terms

st(s) – stitch(es)

ch – chain

sk – skip

sp – space

rep – repeat

dc – double crochet

dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together

sc – single crochet

slst – slip stitch

yo – yarn over

FDC – Foundation Row Double Crochet: Ch3, yo and insert hook into third chain from hook, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). *Yo and pull through 1 loop (this creates the base stitch (chain) for the next fdc), you should still have 3 loops on your hook. Now complete a dc stitch (yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through 2 loops again to complete the dc stitch). To start the next stitch, yo and insert hook into the ‘v’ of the base stitch, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 1 loop on hook (chain created), now complete a dc stitch as before. Continue this sequence for the number of stitches in your desired width. The ch3 at the beginning of your Foundation Row counts like this: 1 chain is the chain stitch and the other two chains are your first DC of Row 1.

Granny Cluster (GC): 3dc in same space/st

Granny Cluster Decrease (GCD): dc in st, dc2tog starting in the same st as previous dc and ending in the next st, then make another dc into same st the dc2tog finished in – you should have a 3dc “granny cluster” that is spread over 2 sc sts.

Corner Cluster: (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in same st

Granny Stitch: Granny Cluster into space between Granny Clusters of the previous round.

Granny Block Blanket: Ornament 1

Row 1: FDC 39

Chain Start Method: Ch41, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch3 at beginning counts as the base ch and first dc – 39 sts.

Row 27: 12 , 1 , 4 , 4 , 1 , 12

Rows 28-32 (5 rows): dc across

SC edging: Ch1, turn. Chain does NOT count as a stitch! Make 2sc in the very first st (first sc is corner), then sc across. 2sc into the last st (last sc is the corner). 2sc around each dc post (or row) down the side. 2sc into the first st along the bottom of the work (first sc is corner). Sc across, 2sc in last st (last sc is corner). 2sc around each dc post (or row) up the side. Join with a slst to your first sc. If you want to make your granny round in a different color, then cut your yarn now.

Change to your 4.5mm hook for making the granny round.

After this week, you can join your granny blocks “as-you-go.” Or you can also wait until the end and join up all 12 blocks at once with the “continuous-join-as-you-go” method.

Granny-ing Round: Join your yarn in the top right corner st of your block OR continue with the same color by working into the st you just joined into. Using a ch3 as your fist dc, work a * Corner Cluster, sk 2 sts; GCD; sk 2 sts (GC, sk 2 sts) repeat ( ) 11 times; Corner Cluster in corner st; sk 2 sts, GCD, sk 2 sts (GC, sk 2 sts) repeat ( ) 18 times total; GCD, sk 2 sts * Repeat between * once more; slst to first dc of starting Corner Cluster.

Not counting the Corner Clusters, you should have:

Top/bottom: 12 Granny Clusters

Sides: 20 Granny Clusters

Note: If adding additional Granny Rounds (or making all blocks first, then joining continuously), please make sure you do not add any chain stitches between your clusters. My Granny Stitch pattern doesn’t include chains between clusters (except for the corner clusters), so you need to keep the same Granny Stitch pattern when adding additional granny rounds or joining continuously.

One-piece Blanket: Rows 1-8

This one-piece pattern contains color change notes, these look like this: ©. If you are making solid color panels, just ignore the color-change symbol. Please see my post on color blocking to make different colored ornaments or colored columns of ornaments. The pictures in the CAL will be showing my one-piece blanket with colored columns. See all the other options for the one-piece blanket in the CAL details post.
