2022 Christmas Filet CAL Week 13 – Borders

Border Time! Both blankets are going to have a Granny Stitch border, but for the one-piece, you’ll finish off with some shells. Really, you could add the same shells to the block blanket, too.

Joined Block Blanket Border

<—- At the point where two block corners are joined together, you will work a GCD over the two adjacent corner spaces.

Round 1: Granny Stitch around your whole blanket by working a GC between each of the Clusters of the round before. Do not make any chains between clusters! You will work a Corner Cluster into each corner space (the ch1 space). At the point where two block corners are joined, work a GCD over the two adjacent corner spaces.

Rounds 2-3: Granny Stitch around your whole blanket  by working a GC between each of the Clusters of the round before and doing a Corner Cluster each corner (the ch1 space).

Round 4 (optional – I didn’t do this): Sc in each stitch around, 3sc in corner spaces.

One-piece Blanket Border

Rnd 1 – SC edging: I prefer to change colors around my blanket to match the stitches I am working into – this gives a cleaner finish to your project, but it is not necessary.

Join with intended color into the top right st of last row. Make 2sc in this st (first sc is corner), then sc across the top. 2sc into the last st (last sc is the corner). 2sc around each dc post (or row) down the side. 2sc into the first st along the bottom (first sc is corner). Sc across, 2sc in last st (last sc is corner). 2sc around each dc post up the side. Join with a slst to your first sc. Finish off color.

Rnd 2 – Granny Stitch: Join your yarn in the top right corner of your blanket. Work 3dc (half a corner cluster) into this corner space. { Sk 2 sts, GCD, sk 2 sts, (GC, sk 2 sts) rep ( ) across the top (51 clusters total). Corner Cluster in corner space. Sk 2 sts, GCD, sk 2 sts (GC, sk 2 sts) repeat ( ) down the side (63 clusters total). } Corner Cluster in corner space.

Repeat between { } once. Finish off the starting corner by adding 3dc into it; ch1 and slst to your starting dc to join the round. Not counting the Corner Clusters you should have-

Top/bottom: 51 Granny Clusters

Sides: 63 Granny Clusters

Rnd 3: Granny Stitch around your blanket again. Not counting the Corner Clusters you should have-

Top/bottom: 52 Granny Clusters

Sides: 64 Granny Clusters

Want a thicker border before the final shells (rnd 4 below)? Cool! Just know that you need to add two rounds of granny at a time for the shell pattern work correctly.

Rnd 4 – Shells: Each stitch on this round is worked between the Granny Clusters.

Join desired color into first space between clusters after any corner with a sc; *alternate (Shell, sc) along side; Corner Shell into ch1 corner space* repeat between * around blanket. Join with a slst to starting sc. Weave in ends.
