Week 6 of the Emoji Filet CAL – 😱 – I kinda love this one. A surprised (horrified?) face. Or maybe it’s a scared face. I guess maybe I should consult a teenager who grew up with texting and emoji as a verb & noun, lol. I fear I am just a wee bit too old to fall into that generation.
On my first date (at just about to be 16) my mom forced me to take along the MONSTER of all cell phones. For emergencies. It was big and long and boxy and I believe part of it flipped open and you had to pull up an antenna to use it. I don’t think texting even existed yet.
The ugly thing took up nearly my whole small black purse (we went to the symphony – I know right – because that was the kind of guy who I needed to carry a cell phone around with cause he was sketchy, lol). BUT – if someone tried to mug us in downtown Portland I could have clocked them with my purse and knocked them out…easily. 🤣 Thanks, mom. I felt much safer!
Anyhow – I use 😱 for surprise or horrified (in a funny way) in my emoji lingo. I hooked up this funny little face (er, emoji) using StyleCraft Special DK Magenta.
I hope you enjoy crocheting this week’s Emoji (and the little antidote from my past – is it reminiscent of your own? Or am I really just THAT old?)

Special Stitch (optional) FDC – Foundation Double Crochet
Ch3, yo and insert hook into third chain from hook, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). *Yo and pull through 1 loop (this creates the base stitch (chain) for the next fdc), you should still have 3 loops on your hook. Now complete a dc stitch (yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through 2 loops again to complete the dc stitch). To start the next stitch, yo and insert hook into the ‘v’ of the base stitch, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 1 loop on hook (chain created), now complete a dc stitch as before. Continue this sequence for the number of stitches in your desired width.
THE CHAIN 3 at the beginning of your Foundation Row counts like this: 1 chain is the chain stitch and the other two chains are your first DC of Row 1.

Bordering the Emoji Block
Rnd 1: Ch1 & turn. Make 2 sc into the first st (mark the first sc, this is your corner), then continue working 1sc into each st across the top of your block until the last st – make 2sc into this last st (mark the second st of this increase – this is a corner). You should have 51 sc between your two marked corner stitches.
Next, you’ll go down the side of your block, making 2sc around each dc post (or row) down the side (you should have 56 sc along the side after your marker corner.
Now you’ll do 2sc into the first stitch (into the ch/FDC) along the bottom of the block (mark the first st of this increase – this is a corner). Now sc in each stitch across to the last chain/FDC where you’ll do another 2sc (mark the second st of this increase – this is a corner). You should have 51 sc sts between your marked corners.
Finish by working 2sc into each row/dc post along the last side (56 sts). Join with a slst to your first sc – which should be marked as a corner.
You should have blocks with 51 sc along the top and bottom, 56 sc along the left/right sides and 1 sc in each corner.
